psychiatry, Psychotherapy & Nutrition

  • Addiction is a challenging disorder which often requires a layered approach addressing neurobiologic, behavioral, psychological, social and spiritual needs.  Dr. Lazarevic's unique background incorporates psychiatry with CAM therapies when appropriate.  From moderation to abstinence, she helps you optimize your health keeping one eye on the risk/benefit of treatments, and another eye on subtle or stubborn patterns of addiction that linger years after last use.

Addictions addressed in treatment include (but are not limited to); alcohol, stimulants, tobacco, ecstasy/molly, opioids, cannabis, sedative-hypnotics, and behavioral addictions (sex, gambling, internet, etc)

At times substance issues are accompanied or proceeded by untreated mood disorders, behavioral addictions, disordered eating, or trauma. No matter the complexity, Dr Lazarevic is skilled to develop a treatment plan to match your needs, which may include certain medicines if appropriate (such as buprenorphine/suboxone, antabuse, campral, naltrexone with the ‘Sinclair Method’, amongst others.)

Please note, she does not administer vivitrol or sulocade.

  • Individual psychotherapy is available through our experienced clinical psychologist and psychiatrist, providing flexible scheduling options on a semi-weekly, weekly, or bi-weekly basis to best accommodate your specific needs and personal preferences.

Our comprehensive range of therapeutic approaches includes psychodynamic psychotherapy, intensive short-term dynamic therapy, motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and mindfulness practices—each carefully tailored to support and enhance your unique healing journey.

Psychotherapy offers numerous benefits, including improved emotional regulation, enhanced coping skills, and greater self-awareness, which can lead to better overall mental health and well-being. Many individuals begin to notice improvements within 6 to 12 sessions, though the time frame varies based on the therapy style and personal circumstances.

    • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is often preferred by those seeking concrete skills for emotional regulation and distress tolerance, particularly in borderline personality disorder.

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns, appealing to individuals who want structured, goal-oriented treatment.

    • Motivational Interviewing is effective for those ambivalent about change, often used in addiction treatment to enhance motivation.

    • Psychodynamic therapy delves into unconscious processes and early life experiences, suitable for individuals interested in deep self-exploration.

    • Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) aims for rapid emotional breakthroughs, appealing to those seeking faster resolution of emotional blockages.

    • Mindfulness-based approaches emphasize present-moment awareness and acceptance, favored by people interested in stress reduction and enhancing emotional resilience through meditation and awareness techniques.

Combining psychotherapy with nutrition creates a comprehensive approach to mental health that addresses multiple facets of well-being. Incorporating nutrition supports brain health and overall physical wellness, which can enhance the effectiveness of both therapy and medication (if present). This integrated approach fosters a more sustainable recovery and promotes holistic healing.

  • Functional nutrition offers a transformative approach for individuals facing mental health challenges by addressing the root causes rather than just symptoms. This personalized method focuses on optimizing nutrient intake and gut health, which are directly linked to brain function and emotional regulation. Key benefits include:

    • Improved Brain Function: Essential vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids play a crucial role in neurotransmitter synthesis and brain signaling, helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and cognitive decline.

    • Reduced Inflammation: Chronic inflammation is linked to many mental health disorders. Functional nutrition targets inflammation through dietary modifications, promoting overall brain health and mood stability.

    • Balanced Gut-Brain Axis: The gut microbiome influences mental health through the gut-brain axis. Functional nutrition supports a healthy microbiome, improving mood and reducing symptoms associated with various conditions.

    • Personalized Care: Unlike generic diets, functional nutrition tailors interventions based on individual biochemistry, lifestyle, and genetics, enhancing effectiveness and long-term mental wellness.

    • Supports Medication Effectiveness: Proper nutrition can optimize the efficacy of psychiatric medications and reduce side effects, contributing to a more comprehensive treatment plan.

At Evolution Medicine, integrating functional nutrition with psychiatry empowers patients to regain control over their mental health through evidence-based, holistic support.

  • Are you currently receiving mental health care or in therapy but feel that your progress has stalled? Are you considering medication or feeling uncertain about your doctor's diagnosis and treatment plan?

Through a thorough evaluation, Dr. Lazarevic can help clarify your treatment plan and collaborate with your healthcare provider to enhance your care.

Dr. Lazarevic treats a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including but not limited to depression, anxiety disorders (panic, OCD, generalized anxiety, phobias), PTSD, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and certain psychotic disorders.

However, she does not specialize in treating patients whose primary concern is an eating disorder, severe personality disorder, or dissociative identity disorder (DID).

  • Our Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation is a thorough, integrative assessment designed to provide patients with the clarity and individualized care they deserve. This evaluation addresses both general psychiatric concerns and addiction-related issues, ensuring that underlying conditions and contributing factors are identified with precision.

During this process, you will be evaluated by a board-certified psychiatrist Dr Lazarevic with expertise in general and addiction psychiatry, who will carefully review your history and current concerns. A collaborating clinical psychologist provides in-depth psychological assessment to offer further diagnostic insight into psychological dynamics driving current patterns, while a registered dietitian evaluates nutritional and lifestyle factors that may be impacting your mental and physical wellbeing. This multidisciplinary approach ensures no aspect of your health is overlooked.

A detailed review of past medical and psychiatric records is available, as well as impressions and input from your other treating providers, to create a full picture of your care journey. This allows us to make accurate, evidence-based diagnoses and develop a targeted treatment plan.

You will leave the evaluation with clear, tailored recommendations that may include therapy, medication management, nutritional guidance, or integrative strategies to support your recovery and long-term wellness.

Our multidisciplinary consultation service is ideal for discerning clients who value innovation, privacy, and optimal outcomes in mental health care. Our evaluation offers a level of depth and integration that reaches far beyond a standard psychiatric consultation, making it an excellent investment in your health and future.
